…drive out to the desert in the middle of the night to watch the shooting stars and then stop at The Donut Man on the way home for a fresh fruit donut?
Every year around my birthday I get the same feeling of excitement: wouldn’t it be fun to drive out to Joshua Tree for the night to see the Perseids meteor shower? Apparently you can see hundreds of shooting stars in an hour. That’s a lot of wishes! But, for one reason or another, it hasn’t happened (mostly having to do with the fact that a good star show doesn’t start in earnest until after midnight so everyone bails and going alone seems like an invitation to reenact a horror movie). The next meteor shower, the Geminids, is December 13th. I’m feeling tempted…
And of course, I feel certain that all that stargazing would work up a good appetite and I’d feel excited to finally have an excuse to stop at The Donut Man. The Donut Man’s fruit donuts, filled with a pint of whatever fruit’s in season, peaches or strawberries, feels like it would satisfy the hunger for both a midnight snack and breakfast. Even cooler? They’re open 24 hours. (I always feel crazy excited to go out to places for food in the middle of the night.) I’m feeling challenged by one fact though: the fruit donuts are only made between February and August though, granted, The Donut Man does make other types of donuts. So, what do you think? Do I go now or do I wait until summer? And, who’s coming with me?
